Zig-Zag Dribbling
🎒 Gear Needed: 1 x basketball, 4 to 6 cones ⏱ Suggested Time: 5 - 10 minutes 👥 Participants: 1 player (Solo / by-yourself) 📍 Space: Backyard, half-court, full-court 📊 Difficulty: Intermediate
📝 Instructions
- Set up 4 to 6 cones in a zig-zag pattern along the court or driveway, spaced approximately 3 metres apart at 45-degree angles.
- Start at the first cone with your basketball in your right hand.
- Attack the first cone at speed with 2 to 3 aggressive dribbles.
- Approximately 50 centimetres before reaching the cone, plant your outside foot firmly in your runners, drop your hips, and execute a sharp change-of-direction move (such as a low crossover, between-the-legs, or reverse spin).
- Switch dribbling hands and accelerate at a 45-degree angle toward the next cone with your left hand on the outside, protecting the ball with your lead shoulder.
- Repeat the change of direction at each cone until completing the course.
- Finish each repetition by exploding toward the key and executing a controlled finish at the ring.
- Complete 5 repetitions down and back, varying your change-of-direction moves.
💡 Coaching Cues
- Change of Speed: Decelerate on approach to the cone, drop your hips, and explode out of your move like a sprinter launching from blocks.
- Keep the Ball on the Outside: Dribble with the hand furthest from imaginary defensive pressure to keep your body positioned between the defender and the ball.
- Plant and Push: Plant your outside foot hard into the court to transfer lateral momentum into forward drive.
🔄 Variations & Progressions
- Make It Easier: Widen the angle between cones and allow players to execute simple front crossovers while jogging at half-speed.
- Make It Harder: Add a guided defender who shadows the dribbler along the zig-zag path, forcing active ball protection against real physical pressure.
