Wrap-Around Dribbles
🎒 Gear Needed: 1 x basketball ⏱ Suggested Time: 5 - 10 minutes 👥 Participants: 1 player (Solo / by-yourself) 📍 Space: No-court, backyard, half-court 📊 Difficulty: Beginner
📝 Instructions
- Stand in an athletic staggered stance with your right foot forward and left foot slightly back, knees bent comfortably.
- Using only your right hand, dribble your basketball around the outside of your right leg in a continuous circular wrap.
- Keep the bounces low, between 10 and 20 centimetres off the floor, using quick fingertip contacts to guide the ball in a tight circle around your foot.
- Complete 15 continuous circles clockwise around your right leg without losing the dribble.
- Reverse direction and complete 15 circles counter-clockwise around the right leg.
- Switch your stance: put your left foot forward, and using your left hand, complete 15 circles counter-clockwise, then 15 circles clockwise around your left leg.
- Finish with body wraps: stand with feet square and dribble the ball behind your back, catching it in front and continuing in a wide loop around both legs.
💡 Coaching Cues
- Soft Fingertip Control: Never slap at the ball; cup and redirect each bounce with spread fingertips and relaxed wrist action.
- Keep Shoulders Over Feet: Maintain your balance without leaning excessively forward or tilting sideways over your knee.
- Eyes Off the Court: As your rhythm develops, lift your eyes and gaze straight ahead to build spatial feel and confidence.
🔄 Variations & Progressions
- Make It Easier: Begin by wrapping the basketball around each leg without dribbling (ball-handling slaps or body wraps in the air) before dropping into live bounces.
- Make It Harder: Transition directly from a right-leg single-hand wrap into a snappy crossover into a left-leg single-hand wrap without taking intermediate setup dribbles.
