Wall Passing
🎒 Gear Needed: 1 x basketball, solid brick or concrete wall, chalk or masking tape
⏱ Suggested Time: 5 - 10 minutes
👥 Participants: Solo (By Yourself)
📍 Space: No-Court / Backyard
📊 Difficulty: Beginner
📝 Instructions
- Target Setup: Using chalk or tape, mark a target square or “X” on a solid exterior brick or concrete wall at chest height (approximately 1.2 metres from the ground). Mark a second target roughly 40 centimetres from the ground for bounce passes.
- Starting Position: Stand in an athletic triple-threat stance 2.5 to 3 metres away from the wall, holding a basketball with both hands in front of your chest.
- Chest Pass Execution: Step forward with your dominant foot toward the wall target. Push the ball directly from your chest, extending your arms forcefully and snapping both wrists outward so your thumbs finish pointing down toward the floor and your palms face outward.
- Clean Two-Hand Catch: Keep your eyes locked on the rebound. Move your feet to meet the ball as it bounces off the wall, catching it cleanly with two hands in triple-threat position before it bounces on the ground.
- Bounce Pass Sequence: Transition to the lower target: step into the pass and aim the ball at the ground roughly two-thirds of the distance to the wall so it strikes the lower target on the rebound.
- Repetition Routine: Perform 20 continuous chest passes, followed immediately by 20 bounce passes, aiming for rhythm, speed, and pinpoint target accuracy.
💡 Coaching Cues
- Snap the Wrists (Thumbs Down): Push the ball straight from your chest and finish with your thumbs pointing down and palms turned out; this generates crisp backspin for an accurate, easy-to-catch pass.
- Step into Every Pass: Step aggressively toward the target with your lead foot to transfer power from your lower body through your fingertips.
- Show 10 Fingers on Catch: Present two open hands with ten spread fingers toward the wall, absorbing the incoming ball with soft fingertips into your chest pocket.
- Hit the Exact Same Spot: Maintain laser focus on hitting the chalk target on every single repetition; precision passing creates open scoring chances in games.
🔄 Variations & Progressions
- Make It Easier: Move closer to the wall (1.5 to 2 metres) and slow down the repetition rate, focusing solely on two-handed wrist snap and soft catching.
- Make It Harder: Incorporate one-handed push passes off the wall (alternating right and left hands), or add a quick between-the-legs or behind-the-back dribble between each wall pass.
