Triple Threat Position & Rips
π Gear Needed: 1 x basketball β± Suggested Time: 5 - 10 minutes π₯ Participants: 1 player (Solo / by-yourself) π Space: No-court, backyard, half-court π Difficulty: Beginner
π Instructions
- Stand facing an imaginary ring or target with feet shoulder-width apart, knees bent into an athletic, loaded stance.
- Hold your basketball in the βshooting pocketβ on your dominant hip, with your shooting hand behind the ball and your guide hand on the side. This is the foundational Triple Threat stance (ready to shoot, pass, or dribble).
- Check your posture: chest up, shoulders squared, chin aligned with the target, and weight distributed evenly across both runners.
- Perform a βLow Sweepβ rip: violently sweep the ball below your knees from your dominant hip across your shins to your non-dominant hip, leading with your elbow while keeping your pivot foot anchored to the floor.
- Pause for 1 second in the opposite pocket, maintaining your deep knee bend.
- Perform a βHigh Ripβ: snap the ball across above your chest/chin level back to the starting shooting pocket, keeping your elbows pointed out to protect the ball from reaching defenders.
- Execute 10 low sweep rips and 10 high rips.
- Switch pivot feet by stepping with the opposite foot, and repeat for 10 reps in each direction.
π‘ Coaching Cues
- Stay in the Tunnel: Keep your head and hips at the same low level during the rip; do not stand straight up as you move the ball across your body.
- Violent, Sharp Snaps: Sweep the ball with authority and speed so a reaching defender cannot strip the ball mid-motion.
- Maintain Pivot Integrity: Keep your pivot foot planted firmly into the court without sliding your heel or pivoting off your spot.
π Variations & Progressions
- Make It Easier: Practice the basic Triple Threat stance in front of a mirror or coach for 30 seconds to lock in balance and ball placement before adding high-speed rips.
- Make It Harder: Immediately follow each low sweep rip with an explosive one-dribble power push toward the key, gathering into a balanced jump stop.
