Transition Outlet and Fill Lanes
π Gear Needed: 1 x basketball, 3 to 5 players per wave, 2 rings (full court)
β± Suggested Time: 5 - 10 minutes
π₯ Participants: Team (3 or 4 Players per transition wave)
π Space: Full-Court
π Difficulty: Intermediate
π Instructions
- Initial Alignment: Three players start on the defensive baseline:
- Player 1 (Rebounder): Directly under the ring.
- Player 2 (Outlet Guard): Positioned on the right side of the key.
- Player 3 (Wing Runner): Positioned on the left sideline.
- The Rebound & Sideline Outlet: The coach or Player 1 throws the basketball against the backboard. Player 1 snatches the rebound with two hands at peak height, lands on both feet, chins the ball, and immediately pivots toward the nearest sideline.
- Flashing to the Outlet: Player 2 sprints to the βoutlet areaβ (free-throw line extended, 1 to 2 metres in from the sideline), calls βOUTLET!β loudly, and presents two ready target hands. Player 1 delivers a crisp overhead or chest pass to Player 2.
- Filling the Outside Lanes: The instant the rebound is secured, Player 3 sprints flat-out down the left sideline, staying wide within 1 metre of the out-of-bounds line to stretch the defense.
- Pushing the Middle Corridor: Player 2 catches the outlet pass on the move, turns upcourt, and pushes the basketball with 2 to 3 aggressive speed dribbles down the middle third of the court.
- The Pass and Layup: As Player 2 crosses the centre line, they deliver a leading chest pass or push pass to Player 3 sprinting down the wing. Player 3 catches the ball in stride inside the key and finishes with a power layup at the opposite ring.
- Wave Continuity: Player 1 trails the play to secure the made basket out of the net, and the group immediately executes the transition outlet and lane fill back down the court in the reverse direction.
π‘ Coaching Cues
- Pivot to the Sideline: Rebounders must immediately pivot toward the nearest sideline; never throw outlet passes blindly across the middle of the key where defensive intercepts occur.
- Sprint the Sidelines (Wider is Better): Wing runners must sprint within 1 metre of the sideline; running down the middle congests the court and allows one defender to guard two players.
- Eyes Up on the Dribble: The outlet guard must push the ball with their head up, surveying the entire court to hit the open wing runner as early as possible.
- Catch and Score in Stride: The sprinting wing must receive the pass without slowing down, taking their two legal gather steps straight to the ring.
π Variations & Progressions
- Make It Easier: Run 3-player transition waves at 50% jogging pace with cones placed along the sidelines and middle corridor to teach running lanes.
- Make It Harder: Add two retreating defenders starting at the centre line; the 3-player wave must read the defensive positioning and execute a 3v2 transition attack within 6 seconds.
