Tennis Ball Toss Dribbling
π Gear Needed: 1 x basketball, 1 x tennis ball, 1 partner β± Suggested Time: 5 - 10 minutes π₯ Participants: 2 players (with-partner) π Space: No-court, backyard, half-court π Difficulty: Intermediate
π Instructions
- The dribbler stands in a balanced, athletic stance with their knees bent and feet shoulder-width apart.
- The partner stands approximately 2 metres directly in front of the dribbler holding a tennis ball.
- The player begins pounding the basketball continuously with their right hand at knee height.
- The partner underhand tosses the tennis ball toward the dribblerβs left (off) hand.
- The dribbler must keep their eyes up, catch the tennis ball cleanly with their left hand without stopping or looking at the basketball dribble, and toss it underhand back to the partner.
- After 15 successful catches with the right hand dribbling, switch hands: dribble with the left hand and catch the tennis ball with the right hand.
- Swap roles so each partner completes 2 rounds with each hand.
π‘ Coaching Cues
- Eyes Locked Forward: Never look down at the basketball. Keep your visual focus squarely on your partnerβs chest and the flight path of the incoming tennis ball.
- Autonomous Dribble Hand: Let your dribbling hand work on autopilot using tactile fingertip feel while your mind focuses on the catch.
- Firm, Active Stance: Keep your core engaged and your runners grounded to absorb the catch without leaning off balance.
π Variations & Progressions
- Make It Easier: Bounce the tennis ball on the ground between partners instead of tossing it through the air to allow extra reaction time.
- Make It Harder: Execute a crossover dribble between catches, switching basketball hands simultaneously as the tennis ball is tossed across.
