Swish Only Challenge

🎒 Gear Needed: 1 x basketball, 1 ring
⏱ Suggested Time: 5 - 10 minutes
👥 Participants: Solo or Partner (1-2 players)
📍 Space: Backyard | Half-Court
📊 Difficulty: Intermediate

📝 Instructions

  1. Station Positioning: Choose 5 spots 2 to 3 metres from the ring around the key (both baselines, both wings, and straight-on).
  2. The Swish Objective: This precision shooting game trains shooters to eliminate flat shots and develop optimal 45-degree entry arc. Only shots that pass cleanly through the net without touching the metal ring qualify as true swishes.
  3. Scoring Rules:
    • Clean Swish (Pure Net): +2 points
    • Made Basket (Touches Ring): 0 points (a make, but not a swish)
    • Missed Shot: -1 point
  4. Target Score: Start at 0 points. Shoot at your own rhythm, retrieving each rebound quickly and setting your feet at the next spot. Continue until you reach +10 points (Champion Shooter) or fall to -5 points (Reset penalty: 10 line hops).
  5. Partner Competition: When playing with a partner, take turns shooting one shot each. The first player to reach 10 points wins the challenge.

💡 Coaching Cues

  • Rainbow Arc: Release the ball high into the air. A shot entering the ring from high above has a larger target opening than a flat bullet pass.
  • Fingertip Roll: Ensure the ball rolls cleanly off your index and middle fingertips to generate true, reverse rotational backspin.
  • Aim for the Back Wire: Pick a target point on the back of the ring net, picturing the ball dropping cleanly through the centre cylinder.

🔄 Variations & Progressions

  • Make It Easier: Start 1.5 metres from the ring directly in front, awarding +1 point for any made shot and +2 points for a swish, with no point deduction for misses.
  • Make It Harder: Increase distance to 4 metres (free-throw line distance). Require two consecutive clean swishes from each spot before allowing the shooter to rotate to the next angle.
