Star Passing Drill

πŸŽ’ Gear Needed: 1 or 2 x basketballs, 5 players (or lines), 1 ring
⏱ Suggested Time: 5 - 10 minutes
πŸ‘₯ Participants: Team (5 Players or 5 Team Lines)
πŸ“ Space: Half-Court
πŸ“Š Difficulty: Intermediate

πŸ“ Instructions

  1. Formation: Five players arrange themselves around the half-court perimeter forming the 5 points of a star:
    • Spot 1: Top of the key (Point) with a basketball.
    • Spot 2: Right wing.
    • Spot 3: Right corner.
    • Spot 4: Left corner.
    • Spot 5: Left wing.
  2. Passing Pattern (Pass Across, Never Around): Players pass across the middle of the court to the second player to their right (forming a five-pointed star pattern):
    • Spot 1 passes across the key to Spot 3 (Right Corner).
    • Spot 3 passes across to Spot 5 (Left Wing).
    • Spot 5 passes across to Spot 2 (Right Wing).
    • Spot 2 passes across to Spot 4 (Left Corner).
    • Spot 4 passes across to Spot 1 (Top of Key).
  3. Pass and Follow: The fundamental rule of the drill is β€œPass and Follow”. The instant a player delivers a crisp chest or bounce pass, they immediately sprint through the middle of the key to take the spot of the player they just passed to.
  4. Vocal Communication: Every passer must shout the receiver’s name loudly before the pass (β€œLucas!”, β€œMia!”), and the receiver must show two open target hands.
  5. Layup Option: After completing 2 continuous cycles through the star pattern, the fifth receiver catches the pass at the wing, attacks the key with one dribble, and finishes with a strong layup at the ring.
  6. Two-Ball Progression: Once the team achieves rhythm, introduce a second basketball simultaneously starting from Spot 4 to test focus and spatial awareness.

πŸ’‘ Coaching Cues

  • Pass Through the Middle, Sprint Through the Middle: Throw the pass across the key with crisp pace, then immediately sprint through the centre of the court to replace the receiver without jogging or cutting corners.
  • Call the Name Before the Pass: Communication is mandatory; shouting your teammate’s name forces them to make eye contact and present two ready target hands before the ball arrives.
  • Catch on Balance: Catch the pass with two hands, stepping into the catch with bent knees rather than reaching out off-balance.
  • Snap, Don’t Float: Passes must be firm chest passes with backspin; high floating passes disrupt the timing of the next cutter and cause collisions in the key.

πŸ”„ Variations & Progressions

  • Make It Easier: Walk through the star passing sequence stationary without the β€œfollow your pass” sprint until all five players understand the geometric passing order.
  • Make It Harder: β€œ2-Ball Rapid Challenge”: run the drill with 2 basketballs in continuous motion; the team must achieve 20 consecutive passes and 4 completed layups at the ring without the balls colliding or touching the floor.
