Spider Dribble
🎒 Gear Needed: 1 x basketball ⏱ Suggested Time: 5 - 10 minutes 👥 Participants: 1 player (Solo / by-yourself) 📍 Space: No-court, backyard, half-court 📊 Difficulty: Intermediate
📝 Instructions
- Stand with your feet spread slightly wider than shoulder-width apart in an athletic squat stance.
- Place the basketball on the ground between your feet.
- Start the dribble with your right hand tapping the front of the ball, immediately followed by your left hand tapping the front of the ball.
- Reach both hands behind your legs without moving your feet: tap the back of the ball with your right hand, then with your left hand.
- Reach forward again to tap front-right then front-left.
- The continuous tap sequence is: Right Front, Left Front, Right Back, Left Back.
- Keep the ball bouncing low, no higher than 10 to 15 centimetres off the ground.
- Work in 30-second intervals, resting for 15 seconds, and aim to increase your rhythm each round.
💡 Coaching Cues
- Stay in a Deep Stance: Bend at your knees and hips rather than rounding your back so you can easily reach behind your legs.
- Quick Fingertip Taps: Do not palm or catch the ball; use soft, rapid fingertip bounces to keep the ball dancing in place.
- Eyes Up and Scanning: As your confidence grows, lift your chin up from the floor to develop court vision while maintaining your handle.
🔄 Variations & Progressions
- Make It Easier: Allow one bounce between each tap sequence or start with simple front-to-back rolls on the ground before adding the continuous bounce.
- Make It Harder: Perform 5 spider cycles, then explode forward into a two-dribble pull-up attack toward the key.
