Shell Drill 4v4 Positioning
π Gear Needed: 1 x basketball, 8 players (4 offense, 4 defense), 1 ring
β± Suggested Time: 10 - 15 minutes
π₯ Participants: Team (4 Offensive Players, 4 Defensive Players)
π Space: Half-Court
π Difficulty: Intermediate
π Instructions
- Offensive Shell Setup: Four offensive players space evenly around the perimeter at standard spots: both corners (or slots) and both wings, roughly 6 to 7 metres from the ring. One offensive player holds a basketball at the top or wing.
- Defensive Alignment (Man-to-Man Principles Only): Each defender matches up with their assigned offensive player in a strict Man-to-Man defensive structure:
- On-Ball Defender: Applies aggressive arm-length pressure on the ball-handler, forcing them away from the middle of the court toward the nearest sideline.
- One Pass Away (Denial): Defenders whose players are one pass away assume a denial stance: lead hand and lead foot in the passing lane with the thumb pointed down, chest facing the opponent, maintaining vision of both the player and the ball.
- Two Passes Away (Split Line Help): Defenders whose players are two passes away drop to the split line (the imaginary vertical axis running from ring to ring down the centre of the key). They straddle the split line with an open βpistolsβ stance (pointing one hand at their player and one hand at the ball).
- Ball Movement on the Perimeter: The offensive team swings the basketball around the perimeter using chest and bounce passes. No dribbling or cutting is permitted initially.
- Defensive Rotation on the Flight of the Ball: Every time the ball leaves a passerβs hands, all four defenders must sprint into their new positions while the ball is airborne:
- The new on-ball defender sprints to close out with choppy steps and a high contest hand.
- The former on-ball defender drops immediately into denial or split-line help position.
- The weakside help defenders adjust their depth along the split line.
- Basketball Australia βNo Zoneβ Policy Reminder: Under Basketball Australia junior competition rules for Under-12s, playing a zone is strictly prohibited. Shell drill reinforces pure Man-to-Man principles (on-ball containment, denial, and split-line help) required across all Australian junior leagues.
- Progression to Live Play: After 4 to 5 passes on the air, the coach calls βLIVE!β, allowing the offense to execute one drive or pass for a shot, testing defensive rotations, communication, and box-outs.
π‘ Coaching Cues
- Move on the Pass, Not the Catch: Adjust your positioning the instant the ball leaves the passerβs fingertips; never wait until your opponent catches the ball to start moving.
- Straddle the Split Line: Weak-side defenders must straddle the split line in the key to protect the ring against penetration while maintaining vision of their perimeter matchup.
- See Ball, See Man (Pistols Stance): Keep your back to the baseline and point one hand toward your matchup and one toward the ball, forming a wide visual triangle so you never lose sight of either.
- Loud Communication: Call your role clearly and loudly: shout βBALL!β when guarding on-ball, βDENY!β when one pass away, and βHELP!β when positioned on the split line.
π Variations & Progressions
- Make It Easier: Run the drill 3v3 instead of 4v4 (top and two wings) to reduce defensive complexity and allow players to clearly see the split-line spacing.
- Make It Harder: Allow the offensive ball-handler to make a 2-dribble baseline or middle penetration, requiring the split-line defender to step across to stop the ball while weakside teammates rotate down to cover the helperβs player.
