Partner Bounce Passes

πŸŽ’ Gear Needed: 1 x basketball, partner
⏱ Suggested Time: 5 - 10 minutes
πŸ‘₯ Participants: Partner (Passer and Receiver)
πŸ“ Space: Backyard / Half-Court
πŸ“Š Difficulty: Beginner

πŸ“ Instructions

  1. Setup: Partners stand facing each other 3.5 to 4 metres apart in athletic stances, knees bent, shoulders square. One player holds a basketball at chest level.
  2. Identify the Bounce Spot: Visually locate the β€œsweet spot” on the floor, which is roughly two-thirds of the distance toward your partner (about 1 metre in front of the receiver’s runners).
  3. Step and Push: The passer steps aggressively forward with their dominant foot toward their partner. Extend both arms downward at a 45-degree angle, pushing the ball firmly toward the floor target.
  4. Wrist Snap: Snap both wrists outward at the point of release so that both thumbs finish pointing down toward the court and palms face outward. This creates strong topspin and forward momentum.
  5. Catch at the Belt Line: The ball should hit the floor with authority and bounce up cleanly to the receiver’s waist or belt line, allowing them to catch without bending awkwardly or lunging forward.
  6. Continuous Sequence: The receiver catches the ball with soft hands, steps forward, and returns an immediate bounce pass. Complete 30 continuous clean passes.

πŸ’‘ Coaching Cues

  • Two-Thirds of the Distance: Aim the ball to bounce two-thirds of the way to your teammate; bouncing too early slows down the pass, while bouncing too late causes it to strike their knees or runners.
  • Thumbs Down, Palms Out: Snap your wrists violently on release; finishing with your thumbs pointed to the floor provides the velocity needed to bypass active defensive hands.
  • Push Down, Don’t Throw Up: Drive the ball sharply into the ground with purpose; a soft, looping bounce pass is easily intercepted by alert defenders.
  • Receive with Ready Hands: The receiving player must show ten open fingers pointing down toward their waist, ready to absorb the bounce into their shooting pocket.

πŸ”„ Variations & Progressions

  • Make It Easier: Place a piece of chalk or a flat floor marker at the two-thirds spot so the passer has a visual target to hit on every bounce.
  • Make It Harder: Add lateral movement: both partners slide sideways 5 metres along the baseline while executing continuous, synchronized bounce passes on the move.
