One-Hand Push Pass off Dribble

πŸŽ’ Gear Needed: 1 x basketball, partner, 2 cones
⏱ Suggested Time: 5 - 10 minutes
πŸ‘₯ Participants: Partner (Dribbler/Passer and Stationary Receiver)
πŸ“ Space: Backyard / Half-Court
πŸ“Š Difficulty: Intermediate

πŸ“ Instructions

  1. Setup: Place two cones 3 metres apart at the top of the key. The receiver stands on the wing 4 metres away, presenting two hands as a target. The passer begins at the first cone with a basketball.
  2. The Attack Dribble: The passer takes two aggressive pound dribbles toward the second cone with their right hand, keeping their eyes up and hips low.
  3. Pass off the Live Dribble: Without gathering or bringing the left hand to the ball, the passer steps forward with their left foot. As the basketball rises off the floor bounce, the passer slides their right hand behind the ball and pushes it directly off the dribble toward the wing receiver.
  4. Wrist Snap and Follow-Through: Extend the right arm fully, snapping the wrist forward with the thumb pointed down and fingers spread toward the receiver’s chest.
  5. Receive and Reset: The receiver catches the ball, resets at the cone, and the players switch roles.
  6. Weak-Hand Development: Complete 15 repetitions with the right hand, then switch sides to execute 15 repetitions with the left hand (dribbling left hand, stepping right foot, pushing off the live left dribble).

πŸ’‘ Coaching Cues

  • No Two-Hand Gather: Never touch the ball with your off-hand before passing; passing directly off the live dribble saves a crucial half-second that prevents defenders from reacting.
  • Hand Behind the Ball: As the dribble rises to waist level, quickly shift your hand from the top of the ball to directly behind the ball to generate forward propulsion.
  • Step with the Opposite Foot: Step firmly with your opposite foot (e.g. step with the left foot when delivering a right-hand push pass) to create power and shield the ball with your body.
  • Keep Eyes on the Ring: Do not telegraph your pass by staring at the receiver; keep your eyes focused toward the key or ring to freeze the defense before pushing the pass to the wing.

πŸ”„ Variations & Progressions

  • Make It Easier: Start stationary without a live dribble: hold the ball in one hand, take one step forward, and push the pass to your partner to master the one-handed wrist release.
  • Make It Harder: Add a dummy defender with outstretched arms at the second cone; the dribbler must execute a low β€œwrap-around” push pass around the defender’s hip to hit the cutter.
