Lane-Slides Mirror Drill

πŸŽ’ Gear Needed: Partner, athletic runners, court markings (key lines or chalk lines)
⏱ Suggested Time: 5 - 10 minutes
πŸ‘₯ Participants: Partner (Leader and Follower)
πŸ“ Space: Half-Court / Backyard
πŸ“Š Difficulty: Beginner

πŸ“ Instructions

  1. Court Alignment: Both players face each other across the key lines, standing roughly 2 to 3 metres apart in an athletic defensive stance.
  2. Assign Roles: One player is designated as the β€œLeader” (acting as the dribbler/attacker), while the other player is the β€œFollower” (the defender).
  3. Leader Movement Patterns: The Leader initiates continuous, erratic lateral movements along their side of the key. The Leader may slide laterally, take two quick slides left, suddenly plant and reverse right, drop step backward 1 metre, or advance forward.
  4. Mirroring Action: The Follower must mirror every single movement of the Leader instantaneously, keeping their chest aligned with the Leader’s chest, maintaining the constant 2 to 3-metre gap, and keeping active hands spread wide.
  5. No Crossing Feet: The defender must move their lead foot first in the direction of travel, never allowing their feet to cross over or their heels to click together.
  6. Cadence & Rotation: Run 30-second continuous bouts at high intensity. After 30 seconds, immediately swap roles so the Leader becomes the Follower. Complete 4 rounds per player.

πŸ’‘ Coaching Cues

  • Chest to Chest Alignment: Focus your eyes on your partner’s chest or singlet number; do not look down at their runners or get faked out by head movements.
  • Lead Foot First: Move the foot in the direction you want to travel first, pushing violently off the back foot to maintain maximum balance and reaction speed.
  • Maintain Floor Contact: Keep continuous contact with the floor; never hop or have both feet off the floor simultaneously, which renders you helpless against sudden counter-direction changes.
  • Elbows In, Hands Active: Keep your elbows in close to your torso with hands wide and active at hip height to maintain core balance without flailing arms.

πŸ”„ Variations & Progressions

  • Make It Easier: The Leader performs smooth, continuous slides from one key line to the other with deliberate, predictable changes of direction.
  • Make It Harder: The Leader holds a basketball and incorporates shot fakes, jab steps, and crossover dribbles while moving, forcing the defender to react with stutter closeouts and recovery slides.
