Jump Stop & Pivot
🎒 Gear Needed: 1 x basketball ⏱ Suggested Time: 5 - 10 minutes 👥 Participants: 1 player (Solo / by-yourself) 📍 Space: No-court, backyard, half-court 📊 Difficulty: Beginner
📝 Instructions
- Stand at the top of the key or in your backyard holding your basketball.
- Spin the ball forward along the court with gentle backspin so it bounces approximately 2 metres ahead of you.
- Sprint after the ball, gather it with two hands, and land on both feet at the exact same instant in a balanced jump stop.
- Establish your non-dominant foot as your pivot foot (keeping it glued firmly to the court).
- Execute a 90-degree forward pivot by stepping forward with your free foot, sweeping the ball low across your knees.
- Return to square, then execute a 180-degree reverse (drop) pivot on the same pivot foot, turning your back to imaginary pressure and chinning the ball.
- Return to triple threat stance, perform a strong rip-through, and simulate an explosive pass or shot at the ring.
- Complete 10 repetitions using the left foot as the pivot, then complete 10 repetitions using the right foot as the pivot.
💡 Coaching Cues
- Simultaneous Landing on Both Feet: Land with both runners hitting the court at the exact same millisecond to allow either foot to become the legal pivot foot.
- Chin the Ball: Keep the basketball tucked securely under your chin with both elbows pointed outward to protect against reaching defenders.
- Stay on the Ball of Your Foot: Pivot smoothly on the ball of your pivot foot without lifting your heel or dragging your toe, which avoids traveling violations.
🔄 Variations & Progressions
- Make It Easier: Practice the jump stop and forward pivot without a basketball first, focusing purely on balanced foot landing and knee flexion.
- Make It Harder: Add a guided partner who applies active hand pressure upon your jump stop, requiring you to read their leverage and pivot away from their reach.
