Jab Step & Cross
π Gear Needed: 1 x basketball, 1 cone β± Suggested Time: 5 - 10 minutes π₯ Participants: 1 player (Solo / by-yourself) π Space: No-court, backyard, half-court π Difficulty: Intermediate
π Instructions
- Place a cone 1 metre in front of you to represent an on-ball defender.
- Catch or self-toss your basketball into a solid Triple Threat stance with your left foot established as the pivot foot.
- Execute a short, sharp βJab Stepβ with your right foot: step directly toward the defenderβs front foot, driving your right foot roughly 15 to 20 centimetres into the floor while dipping your right shoulder and pushing the ball toward the defenderβs hip.
- Keep the majority of your weight centered over your left pivot foot so you can react immediately without getting stuck forward.
- In one explosive motion, push off the inside edge of your right foot, rip the basketball low across your shins, and step your right leg across the front of the cone in a long βCross Stepβ drive.
- Put the ball down to the court with your right hand on the outside of your knee before lifting your left pivot foot, driving hard past the cone toward the key.
- Perform 10 repetitions driving right from the jab-cross.
- Switch pivot feet (right foot pivot, jabbing with the left foot) and complete 10 repetitions driving left.
π‘ Coaching Cues
- Short, Crisp Jab: Do not over-extend your jab step; a 15 to 20 centimetre jab keeps your center of gravity under control so you can explode in the opposite direction.
- Shoulder and Ball Dip: Sell the jab with your eyes, lead shoulder, and a subtle ball fake to force the defender to slide their feet.
- Ball Down Before Pivot Lifts: Release the dribble to the floor ahead of your drive before your back pivot foot leaves the court to strictly comply with junior traveling rules.
π Variations & Progressions
- Make It Easier: Practice the jab step and return to triple threat stance 5 times in a row without driving, focusing on keeping the pivot foot frozen in place.
- Make It Harder: Add a βJab and Goβ direct drive option: if the imaginary defender does not react to the jab, explode directly down the jab side without crossing over.
