Help and Recover Drill

πŸŽ’ Gear Needed: 1 x basketball, 1 ring, 4 players (2 offensive players, 2 defensive players)
⏱ Suggested Time: 5 - 10 minutes
πŸ‘₯ Participants: Small Team (2v2 Setup)
πŸ“ Space: Half-Court
πŸ“Š Difficulty: Intermediate

πŸ“ Instructions

  1. Setup: Two offensive players stand on the perimeter: Player 1 at the top of the key with a basketball, and Player 2 on the right wing, roughly 5 metres away.
  2. Defensive Alignment: Defender 1 guards Player 1 on-ball in an athletic stance. Defender 2 guards Player 2, but drops 2 to 3 metres off their player into the key, positioning straddling the split line (the imaginary vertical axis running from ring to ring).
  3. The Penetration (Drive): Player 1 executes a hard drive toward the right elbow or middle of the key. Defender 1 slides to contest, but is slightly beaten by the dribble.
  4. The Help (Stunt and Wall Up): Defender 2 recognizes the middle penetration, calls β€œHELP!” loudly, and slides 1 to 2 steps across the key to step into the driving gap. Defender 2 shows a broad chest and active hands to form a physical wall, forcing Player 1 to pick up their dribble or halt penetration.
  5. The Kick and Recovery: Prevented from finishing at the ring, Player 1 makes a skip or kick-out pass to the open Player 2 on the wing.
  6. Sprint and Close Out: The instant the basketball leaves Player 1’s hands, Defender 2 pivots and sprints flat-out toward the wing. Over the final metre, Defender 2 breaks down into rapid choppy steps, raises a high contest hand, sinks low into an athletic stance, and calls β€œBALL!”.
  7. Rotate Roles: Meanwhile, Defender 1 drops back to the split line to establish the new help-side position. Run 4 to 5 repetitions from each side of the court, then rotate offense and defense.

πŸ’‘ Coaching Cues

  • Stunt, Don’t Over-Commit: Slide into the driving corridor to build a wall and force the ball-handler to pull up, but do not fully commit your weight so far forward that you cannot recover on the pass.
  • Recover on the Flight of the Ball: Never wait until the wing player catches the pass to start sprinting; explode out of the key the instant the ball leaves the passer’s hands.
  • Choppy Steps on Arrival: Decelerate under control with short, buzzing steps so the attacker cannot blow past your closeout with a pump fake or drive.
  • Talk Constantly: Shout β€œHELP!” when protecting the ring from the split line, and β€œRECOVER!” or β€œBALL!” when sprinting out to contest your perimeter assignment.

πŸ”„ Variations & Progressions

  • Make It Easier: The offensive ball-handler takes two slow dribbles toward the key, pauses for one second, and throws a looping chest pass to give the recovering defender ample time to master footwork.
  • Make It Harder: Live 2v2 play: once the kick-out pass reaches the wing, Player 2 is live to shoot, drive to the ring, or pass back to Player 1 for a 10-second shot clock possession.
