Form Shooting
π Gear Needed: 1 x basketball, 1 ring
β± Suggested Time: 5 - 10 minutes
π₯ Participants: Solo (1 player)
π Space: Backyard | Half-Court
π Difficulty: Beginner
π Instructions
- Stance & Setup: Stand 1 metre directly in front of the ring. Establish a balanced athletic base with your feet shoulder-width apart, knees comfortably bent, and your shooting-side foot positioned slightly forward.
- One-Hand Balance: Place the basketball directly on your shooting palm and pads of your fingers (off-hand kept behind your back to isolate release mechanics). Your shooting elbow must sit directly underneath the ball, forming an βLβ shape.
- Upward Extension: Initiate your shot upward through your legs and core. Extend your shooting arm smoothly toward the ceiling rather than pushing forward.
- Wrist Snap & Follow-Through: Release the ball off your index and middle fingers with relaxed backspin. Hold your follow-through (the classic βgoose neckβ) high until the ball clears the net.
- Spot Rotation: Make 5 clean swishes from directly in front of the ring. Next, move 1 metre to the right block at a 45-degree angle and make 5 swishes. Finish by moving 1 metre to the left block for another 5 swishes.
π‘ Coaching Cues
- Elbow Under Ball: Keep your shooting elbow tucked in line with your shoulder and pointing straight at the ring.
- Goose Neck Finish: Snap your wrist fully at release, leaving your fingers relaxed and floppy over the front of the ring.
- Up Not Out: Drive your energy upward toward the sky so the ball drops through the ring with high arc.
π Variations & Progressions
- Make It Easier: Stand 0.5 metres from the ring, lower the release target slightly, and allow the guide hand to lightly steady the side of the ball without pushing.
- Make It Harder: Step back to 2 metres from the ring, introduce the guide hand into a standard shooting pocket, and demand 3 consecutive swishes at each spot before rotating.
