Figure-8 Dribble
🎒 Gear Needed: 1 x basketball ⏱ Suggested Time: 5 - 10 minutes 👥 Participants: 1 player (Solo / by-yourself) 📍 Space: No-court, backyard, half-court 📊 Difficulty: Beginner
📝 Instructions
- Stand with your feet spread wider than shoulder-width apart in a balanced, comfortable knee-bent stance.
- Hold your basketball with your right hand in front of your right leg.
- Dribble the ball between your legs from front to back.
- Reach your left hand behind your left leg to receive the ball, and dribble it around the outside of your left leg to the front.
- With your left hand, dribble the ball through your legs from front to back toward your right side.
- Reach your right hand behind your right leg to receive the ball, guiding it around the outside of your right leg back to the starting point.
- This continuous path weaves a figure-8 pattern around and between both legs.
- Maintain a low, controlled bounce, keeping the ball below knee height (around 15 to 20 centimetres off the ground).
- Perform 10 continuous cycles forward, rest for 15 seconds, then reverse direction (dribbling back-to-front through the legs) for 10 cycles.
💡 Coaching Cues
- Fingertip Touch: Use your finger pads to guide and control the ball rather than slapping with the flat palm of your hand.
- Keep Hips Low and Stable: Drop your weight into your hips and knees; avoid bending excessively at the lower back.
- Look Ahead: Keep your head up and eyes scanning forward to avoid relying on watching the basketball bounce.
🔄 Variations & Progressions
- Make It Easier: Start by rolling the basketball along the court floor in a figure-8 pattern using your hands before advancing to the live dribble.
- Make It Harder: Count how many complete figure-8 cycles you can complete in 30 seconds without losing control, or add a quick one-two crossover between cycles.
