Fast Break 2v1 Advantage

πŸŽ’ Gear Needed: 1 x basketball, 3 players (2 attackers, 1 defender), 1 ring
⏱ Suggested Time: 5 - 10 minutes
πŸ‘₯ Participants: Small Team (2 Attackers vs 1 Defender)
πŸ“ Space: Full-Court / Half-Court
πŸ“Š Difficulty: Intermediate

πŸ“ Instructions

  1. Setup: The lone defender starts in the key near the free-throw line in an athletic stance. Two offensive players begin at the centre line, spaced 4 to 5 metres apart (one in the middle corridor with a basketball, one running the wide wing).
  2. The Fast Break Attack: The ball-handler pushes the ball down the middle of the court toward the key at speed, keeping their eyes on the lone defender. The wing player sprints wide, staying even with or slightly behind the ball to avoid being offside or overrun.
  3. Attacking the Defender: The ball-handler drives directly at the defender’s outside shoulder to force the defender into making a decisive choice.
  4. Reading the Defender’s Commitment:
    • Option A (Defender Commits to Ball): If the defender steps forward to halt the ball-handler outside the key, the ball-handler immediately delivers a crisp bounce or chest pass to the sprinting wing teammate for an uncontested layup at the ring.
    • Option B (Defender Stays with the Wing): If the defender bluffs and drops back to take away the pass, the ball-handler takes the open corridor and drives straight to the ring for a power layup.
  5. Defensive Strategy: The lone defender retreats, β€œstunting” (faking forward and recovering) to create hesitation, aiming to force at least two passes and contest the final shot without fouling.
  6. Rotation: The shooter becomes the new defender, the defender rotates to the offensive line, and a new attacker joins. Run continuous reps for 5 to 10 minutes.

πŸ’‘ Coaching Cues

  • Maintain Wide Spacing: Keep 4 to 5 metres of separation between attackers; running too close together allows one defender to guard both players simultaneously.
  • Force the Defender to Commit: Dribble aggressively toward the defender until they are forced to step up; stopping early allows the defender to stay balanced between both attackers.
  • Pass on Time, Pass on Target: Deliver the pass before you get trapped; lead your running teammate with a bounce pass directly into their layup stride.
  • Chin the Rebound: If a shot misses, both offensive players must crash the ring to secure the second-chance rebound before the defender clears it.

πŸ”„ Variations & Progressions

  • Make It Easier: Walk through the 2v1 at half-speed with the defender holding a blocking pad or holding their hands down to give young players time to make the passing read.
  • Make It Harder: Add a β€œChaser Defender” starting 3 metres behind the attackers at half-court; the 2v1 advantage must be converted within 4 seconds before the trailing defender recovers into the play.
