Defensive Closeouts Drill

πŸŽ’ Gear Needed: 1 x basketball, partner, 1 ring (optional)
⏱ Suggested Time: 5 - 10 minutes
πŸ‘₯ Participants: Partner (Passer and Closer)
πŸ“ Space: Backyard / Half-Court
πŸ“Š Difficulty: Beginner

πŸ“ Instructions

  1. Starting Positions: The offensive partner stands on the wing or top of the key with a basketball. The defender starts in the middle of the key on the split line (imaginary vertical line running from ring to ring).
  2. The Pass and Closeout Sprint: The offensive player slaps the ball or yells β€œBall!” and catches in triple threat. The defender immediately sprints 2 to 3 metres toward the shooter at maximum speed to close down the open space.
  3. Decelerate with Choppy Steps: As the defender approaches within 1 metre of the shooter, they chop their feet rapidly (short, buzzing stutter steps) to decelerate under control and drop their hips into an athletic stance.
  4. High Hand Contest: The defender raises one β€œhigh hand” over the flight line of the shot while keeping the opposite hand down wide to contest driving passes and protect against a quick blow-by drive.
  5. Vocalise and Hold Stance: The defender yells β€œSHOT!” or β€œBALL!” loudly on arrival, absorbs any initial shot fake without leaving their feet, and slides to contain the offensive player’s first jab or drive attempt.
  6. Rotate: Complete 6 closeout repetitions from different spots (both wings, corners, top of the key), then switch roles.

πŸ’‘ Coaching Cues

  • Sprint Two-Thirds, Chop One-Third: Sprint flat-out over the first two-thirds of the distance to take away time, then break down into rapid choppy steps for the final third to maintain balance.
  • One Hand High, One Hand Low: Contest the high release with one extended hand while keeping your low hand active to deflect passes and guard the bounce.
  • Stay on Your Feet: Do not jump on shot fakes! Stay grounded with knees bent; only contest with length and verticality, not jumping past the shooter.
  • Voice on Arrival: Yell β€œBALL!” loudly as you arrive to communicate intensity and signal to your teammates that the ball is contained.

πŸ”„ Variations & Progressions

  • Make It Easier: The partner remains stationary with the ball held at chest level; the defender walks through the sprint, foot chop, and high hand finish.
  • Make It Harder: Live 1v1 on closeout: after the closeout, the offensive player has 2 dribbles to attempt a drive to the ring or pull up for a contested shot.
