Continuous Layup Lines
π Gear Needed: 2 x basketballs, 1 ring, group of players (4+ players)
β± Suggested Time: 5 - 10 minutes
π₯ Participants: Team (4-12 players)
π Space: Half-Court | Full-Court
π Difficulty: Beginner
π Instructions
- Formation Setup: Form two parallel lines at the centre line (or 3-point line extended):
- Shooting Line: Starts on the right wing/sideline. The first two players in this line each hold a basketball.
- Rebounding Line: Starts on the left wing/sideline with open hands.
- The Drive & Finish: On the coachβs whistle, the first shooter attacks the ring with two hard speed dribbles, gathers at the key line, and finishes a clean right-handed overhand layup off the backboard square.
- The Rebound & Outlet: The first player in the rebounding line times their run to sprint directly under the ring. They snatch the ball with two strong hands before it hits the court, yell βBALL!β, pivot toward the outside sideline, and deliver a crisp chest pass to the next player in the shooting line.
- Continuous Rotation:
- The shooter runs along the baseline and jogs to the back of the rebounding line.
- The rebounder follows their pass to join the back of the shooting line.
- The second shooter begins their drive the moment the first shooter leaves the floor.
- Team Challenge: Run for 3 minutes on the right side. The team must work together to make 25 layups without allowing a single ball to touch the court. Reset the drill on the left side to practice left-handed finishes.
π‘ Coaching Cues
- Loud Communication: The rebounder must call out βOUTLET!β or βBALL!β loudly before making the return pass.
- Snatch with Two Hands: High-point the rebound out of the net with two hands and chin it immediately.
- Never Let It Bounce: Keep the tempo high by catching every make or miss in the air before it touches the hardwood.
π Variations & Progressions
- Make It Easier: Run at half-speed with only 1 ball, allowing the ball to bounce once before the rebounder secures it.
- Make It Harder: βGame-Speed Pressureβ β place a coach or defender on the second key hash mark holding a bump cushion, giving every driver a controlled chest bump as they gather.
