Cone Hesitation & Blow-By
π Gear Needed: 1 x basketball, 3 cones, 1 ring β± Suggested Time: 5 - 10 minutes π₯ Participants: 1 player (Solo / by-yourself) π Space: Backyard, half-court π Difficulty: Intermediate
π Instructions
- Place three cones in a straight line spaced 2 metres apart along the perimeter or wing, leading directly toward the key.
- Start behind the first cone with your basketball in your right hand.
- Attack the second cone with two hard, aggressive dribbles.
- As you reach within 1 metre of the second cone, execute a stutter-step hesitation (βhesiβ): decelerate sharply, bring your off-hand close to the ball as if gathering for a jump shot, raise your eyes to the ring, and pause for a fraction of a second to freeze the defender.
- The instant you see the imaginary defender relax or shift upward onto their toes, drop your hips, push off your back foot, and deliver a sudden, long acceleration dribble past the cone.
- Gather at the edge of the key and finish with a strong, controlled layup at the ring.
- Repeat the sequence 8 times driving right, then switch hands and complete 8 repetitions driving left with a left-hand finish at the ring.
π‘ Coaching Cues
- Sell the Shot with Your Eyes: Lift your eyes to the ring and bring your guide hand near the ball; defenders only freeze if they genuinely believe you are about to shoot.
- Drop and Explode: Drop your chest and hips low on the acceleration step so your shoulder creates a low leverage angle beneath the defenderβs hip.
- Decisive Change of Speed: Exaggerate the contrast between the hesitation glide (slow) and the immediate first-step launch (fast).
π Variations & Progressions
- Make It Easier: Practice the hesitation footwork stationary at the cone without completing the finishing drive, ensuring your feet stutter and plant cleanly.
- Make It Harder: Add a second counter-option: if a partner standing as a defender steps back, rise straight up for a pull-up jumper; if they lunge forward, blow past them for a layup.
