Closeout & Retreat Footwork
π Gear Needed: 3 cones β± Suggested Time: 5 - 10 minutes π₯ Participants: 1 player (Solo / by-yourself) π Space: No-court, backyard, half-court π Difficulty: Intermediate
π Instructions
- Set up three cones in a triangle on the court: Cone A on the split line inside the key, Cone B at the perimeter wing (3 metres away), and Cone C 3 metres along the baseline.
- Begin in a low, active defensive stance at Cone A with your inside foot anchored on the split line, watching the imaginary ball.
- On your coachβs call (or self-command βBALL!β), sprint the first 2 metres toward Cone B at top speed to close the distance quickly.
- For the final metre of the closeout, chop your feet rapidly with short, stuttering steps (βchoppy feetβ) to decelerate without lunging forward.
- Arrive at Cone B in a balanced defensive stance: knees deeply bent, chest broad, one high hand contesting an imaginary shot, and the off-hand low to trace the ball or deflection lane.
- The moment you establish your closeout stance, drop your baseline foot backward at a 45-degree angle in an explosive drop-step to cut off a baseline drive.
- Push off your lead foot and execute 3 hard lateral retreat defensive slides along the 45-degree angle toward Cone C.
- Finish by planting, sinking your hips, and holding a solid wall stance.
- Jog back to Cone A, rest for 15 seconds, and complete 8 repetitions closing out to the right wing, followed by 8 repetitions closing out to the left wing.
π‘ Coaching Cues
- Sprint then Stutter: Sprint hard to eat up the initial distance, then decelerate with rapid choppy footwork so you arrive balanced without getting blown past.
- High Hand on Closeout: Extend one hand high to contest the shooterβs vision while keeping your hips low; never jump into the air on a perimeter closeout.
- Drop Step Without Crossing: Open your hips with a clean drop step and push off the balls of your runners; never cross your feet during defensive retreat slides.
π Variations & Progressions
- Make It Easier: Walk through the closeout deceleration and drop-step mechanics at half-speed, focusing on wide balance and high hand placement.
- Make It Harder: Have a partner stand at the perimeter wing holding a basketball: if they raise the ball, closeout with a high contest hand; if they fake and drive, immediately drop step and slide to cut them off.
