Box-Out Rebounding Fundamentals

πŸŽ’ Gear Needed: 1 x basketball, 1 ring, partner
⏱ Suggested Time: 5 - 10 minutes
πŸ‘₯ Participants: Partner (Defender and Offensive Rebounder)
πŸ“ Space: Backyard / Half-Court
πŸ“Š Difficulty: Beginner

πŸ“ Instructions

  1. Starting Setup: The offensive player stands outside the key near the foul line or wing. The defensive player starts inside the key in legal guarding position between the offensive player and the ring, about 1 metre away.
  2. The Call: A third person or the offensive player shoots or throws the basketball off the backboard or ring. As soon as the ball leaves the shooter’s hands, the defender calls β€œSHOT!” loudly.
  3. Make Physical Contact (Hit): The defender steps directly toward the offensive player, making controlled contact with their forearm or chest to arrest forward momentum. Never turn your back without first finding your player.
  4. Pivot and Seal (Hold): The defender executes a sharp reverse pivot or front pivot, placing their hips and buttocks into the offensive player’s midsection. With a wide stance, elbows bent wide at chest level, and arms in an β€œL” shape, the defender seals the opponent behind them.
  5. Attack the Ball (Fetch): As the rebound descends off the ring, the defender explodes off both legs, snares the basketball at the peak of their jump with two hands, and pulls it down securely under their chin (β€œchinning the ball”) with elbows spread wide for ball protection.
  6. Rotate: Alternate repetitions between offense and defense for 10 total rebounds.

πŸ’‘ Coaching Cues

  • Hit, Find, Fetch: First make contact with your opponent (Hit), pivot into a wide seal with your hips (Hold), then track and grab the ball at its highest point (Fetch).
  • Call β€œSHOT!” Early: Shout β€œSHOT!” the instant the ball is airborne to alert all teammates and trigger your box-out movement.
  • Wide Base, Low Centre of Gravity: Keep your feet wider than your shoulders and sink your hips so the opponent cannot push or slip past you toward the ring.
  • Chin the Ball: Secure the rebound with two strong hands and pull it tightly beneath your chin with elbows pointed outward to protect against strip attempts.

πŸ”„ Variations & Progressions

  • Make It Easier: Run the drill without a basketball first; on the coach’s call of β€œSHOT”, the defender focuses purely on finding their partner, making chest contact, and pivoting into a 3-second box-out hold.
  • Make It Harder: Live 1v1 rebounding battle where the offensive player uses fakes and swim moves to fight around the box-out, and the winner must secure possession and make an outlet pass.
