Beat the Pro
π Gear Needed: 1 x basketball, 1 ring
β± Suggested Time: 5 - 10 minutes
π₯ Participants: Solo (1 player)
π Space: Backyard | Half-Court
π Difficulty: Intermediate
π Instructions
- Spot Selection: Mark 5 shooting spots around the perimeter of the key (baseline right 2.5 metres, right wing 3 metres, free-throw line centre, left wing 3 metres, baseline left 2.5 metres).
- Scoring System: You play a high-pressure 1v1 game against an imaginary basketball βProβ (such as Australian Boomers star Patty Mills). Each shot you make earns you +1 point. Each shot you miss awards the Pro +2 points.
- Gameplay & Hustle: Start at spot 1. Shoot at game speed, immediately chase your own rebound before the ball bounces twice, and dribble or spin the ball out to the next spot around the key.
- Winning Target: First to reach 10 points wins the match. If you hit 10 points first, you beat the Pro. If the Pro reaches 10 points first, complete 5 star jumps before starting the next round.
- Series: Play a best-of-three series to test your shooting poise under mental scoreboard pressure.
π‘ Coaching Cues
- Game Speed Footwork: Do not walk between spots. Sprint to each position, establish a balanced 1-2 stride stop or jump stop, and elevate.
- Eyes Locked on Ring: Keep your eyes focused on the back of the ring from the moment you gather until your follow-through completes.
- Composure Under Pressure: When trailing the Pro on the scoreboard, slow down your breathing, trust your shooting rhythm, and maintain your high follow-through.
π Variations & Progressions
- Make It Easier: Move the 5 spots closer to 2 metres from the ring, or adjust the scoring so misses give the Pro only +1 point instead of +2.
- Make It Harder: Move to 4 metres out around the key, and enforce a rule where only clean swishes count as +1 point for you, while regular makes count as 0.
