Backdoor Cut Drill
π Gear Needed: 1 x basketball, partner (or coach), 1 ring
β± Suggested Time: 5 - 10 minutes
π₯ Participants: Partner (Passer at Top and Wing Cutter)
π Space: Backyard / Half-Court
π Difficulty: Intermediate
π Instructions
- Setup: The passer starts at the top of the key holding a basketball in triple threat. The cutter lines up on the wing, roughly 5 metres from the ring. A cone or defender is placed on the wing to simulate an aggressive denial defender.
- Read the Denial: The wing cutter takes 2 slow steps up toward the top of the key as if coming to receive a standard perimeter chest pass. The defender/cone steps up into the passing lane, overplaying the pass.
- The Plant and Cut: As soon as the defender crosses the line between the ball and the receiver, the cutter plants their outside (high) foot hard into the timber.
- Explode to the Ring: In a fraction of a second, the cutter drops their hips, turns their shoulders toward the baseline, and explodes backdoor behind the defender, sprinting along the edge of the key directly toward the ring.
- The Bounce Pass Delivery: The top passer reads the backdoor cut, steps with their lead foot, and delivers a crisp bounce pass that meets the cutter in stride right inside the key.
- Finish Strong: The cutter catches the ball on both feet or in stride and finishes with an uncontested layup off the backboard into the ring.
- Rotation: Switch sides after 10 repetitions, running the backdoor cut from both the right and left wings.
π‘ Coaching Cues
- Read the Defenderβs Feet: If your defenderβs top foot is higher up the court than yours and their hand is in the passing lane, that is your automatic trigger to cut backdoor.
- Hard Outside Plant: Plant your outside foot with authority into the floor to stop your upward momentum, and drive your inside knee toward the ring.
- Keep Eyes on the Passer: Turn your head toward the ball immediately upon planting so you see the bounce pass coming out of the passerβs hands.
- Low Bounce Pass: The passer must deliver a firm, low bounce pass into the open space ahead of the cutter, keeping the ball away from the trailing defenderβs recovery reach.
π Variations & Progressions
- Make It Easier: The passer remains stationary and calls βCUT!β aloud to signal the exact timing of the plant and backdoor explosion for younger players.
- Make It Harder: Live 1v1 play on the wing: the defender actively chooses whether to play off (forcing a catch on the perimeter) or overplay (triggering a live backdoor cut to the ring).
