Around the World Shooting

πŸŽ’ Gear Needed: 1 x basketball, 1 ring
⏱ Suggested Time: 5 - 10 minutes
πŸ‘₯ Participants: Solo or Partner (1-2 players)
πŸ“ Space: Backyard | Half-Court
πŸ“Š Difficulty: Beginner

πŸ“ Instructions

  1. Spot Setup: Mark 5 designated shooting stations in a semi-circle around the key:
    • Spot 1: Right baseline (2 metres from ring)
    • Spot 2: Right wing (2.5 metres from ring)
    • Spot 3: Free-throw line centre (3.5 metres from ring)
    • Spot 4: Left wing (2.5 metres from ring)
    • Spot 5: Left baseline (2 metres from ring)
  2. Advancing Outbound: Begin at Spot 1. Shoot with balanced shooting form. If you make the shot, advance immediately to Spot 2.
  3. The β€˜Chance It’ Rule (Optional Partner Play): If you miss a shot, you may choose to β€œSave” your position and pass to your partner, or β€œChance It.” If you β€œChance It” and make the second attempt, you advance. If you miss the β€œChance,” you reset all the way back to Spot 1!
  4. The Return Voyage: After reaching Spot 5, you must journey all the way back (Spot 4, Spot 3, Spot 2, Spot 1) to officially complete the world tour.
  5. Winning: The first player to travel around the world and return home to Spot 1 completes the challenge. For solo training, time how quickly you complete the round trip.

πŸ’‘ Coaching Cues

  • Square Ten Toes to the Ring: Align your feet and hips directly toward the ring before dipping into your shooting motion.
  • Hold the Goose Neck: Freeze your wrist snap and shooting hand high until the ball falls through the net.
  • Dip and Rise: Catch or gather the ball at your waist, bending your knees to create effortless upward momentum from the legs.

πŸ”„ Variations & Progressions

  • Make It Easier: Position all 5 spots 1.5 metres from the ring, and eliminate the β€œChance It” penalty so players simply shoot until they make one from each spot.
  • Make It Harder: Enforce a β€œSwish Only” rule where bank shots or ring grazes do not count, or expand the shooting arc out to 4 metres.
