3v3 Spacing Drive and Kick
π Gear Needed: 1 x basketball, 6 players (3 offensive, 3 defensive), 1 ring
β± Suggested Time: 10 - 15 minutes
π₯ Participants: Small Team (3v3 Half-Court)
π Space: Half-Court
π Difficulty: Intermediate
π Instructions
- Initial Perimeter Alignment: Three offensive players set up in a balanced perimeter triangle: Player 1 at the top of the key with a basketball, Player 2 on the right wing, and Player 3 on the left wing. All players maintain a 5 to 6-metre spacing distance.
- Defensive Setup (Man-to-Man): Three defenders match up in legal Man-to-Man defense: on-ball pressure at the top, and two help defenders straddling the split line in the key.
- The Penetration Drive: Player 1 executes a hard attack dribble down the right key line or baseline toward the ring, drawing the primary defender and forcing the weakside help defender to collapse into the key to protect the ring.
- Perimeter Relocation (Filling the Window): As Player 1 drives:
- Player 2 (same-side wing) slides along the perimeter to the corner (βdriftβ) to create a clean passing angle.
- Player 3 (weakside wing) slides up to the top of the key (βreplaceβ) to remain in the driverβs peripheral vision.
- The Kick-Out Delivery: As the help defense collapses to seal the key, Player 1 makes a controlled jump stop and fires a crisp two-handed chest pass or one-hand push pass to the open Player 2 positioned in the corner or Player 3 at the top.
- Catch and Attack: The receiver catches the kick-out pass in a low, balanced triple-threat stance, ready to take an uncontested shot at the ring or immediately drive the opposite gap (βextra passβ).
- Rotation: Play out each possession until a score, defensive rebound, or turnover. Rotate offensive and defensive trios after 3 possessions.
π‘ Coaching Cues
- Drive to Pass, Not Just to Score: Attack the key with your head up; your goal is to draw two defenders and create an uncontested scoring opportunity for an open teammate.
- Never Stand Still on a Drive: If a teammate drives toward the ring, you must relocate along the three-point arc to provide an open passing window; standing behind a defender creates a turnover.
- Jump Stop Before the Kick: Do not throw wild passes in mid-air; execute a controlled two-footed jump stop in the key before delivering your pass.
- Shot-Ready Catch: The perimeter receiver must have their knees bent, chest square to the ring, and fingers spread as target hands before the pass arrives.
π Variations & Progressions
- Make It Easier: Run 3v0 without defenders so players clearly understand the timing of the corner drift and top replacement on middle and baseline drives.
- Make It Harder: Introduce a βOne Extra Passβ rule: the team cannot shoot off the initial kick-out; they must make one additional touch pass to find the best open shot at the ring.
