2v2 Continuous Scrimmage

πŸŽ’ Gear Needed: 1 x basketball, 4 players (2 pairs), 1 ring
⏱ Suggested Time: 10 - 15 minutes
πŸ‘₯ Participants: Small Team (2v2 Continuous Gameplay)
πŸ“ Space: Half-Court
πŸ“Š Difficulty: Intermediate

πŸ“ Instructions

  1. Setup: Two offensive players start on the perimeter (one at the top of the key with a basketball, one on the wing). Two defenders match up in active Man-to-Man defense (one on-ball, one in help position straddling the split line).
  2. Small-Sided Game Rules:
    • 3-Dribble Limit: No player is allowed more than 3 dribbles per touch; this strictly eliminates selfish isolation dribbling and forces rapid decision-making.
    • Pass and Cut Constraint: A player who makes a pass must immediately execute a hard cut to the ring or set an on-ball/off-ball screen; standing still after passing results in an immediate turnover.
    • Minimum 2 Passes: The offense must complete at least two passes before taking a shot at the ring.
  3. Gameplay Execution: The ball-handler initiates play with a pass or drive. The off-ball player reads the defense, executing give-and-gos, backdoor cuts, or dribble-at exchanges to create scoring opportunities.
  4. Transition Continuity:
    • If the offense scores, they must sprint back on defense while the defenders take the ball and clear it beyond the three-point line.
    • If the defense secures a defensive rebound or forces a turnover, they must pass or dribble the ball outside the key arc to β€œclear” it before attacking the ring.
  5. Scoring: Play to 7 points (baskets count as 1 point). First team to 7 wins the round. Rotate pairs to ensure all players compete against different matchups.

πŸ’‘ Coaching Cues

  • Pass, Cut, Replace: Whenever you release the ball, immediately cut hard through the key to the ring; if you do not receive the return pass, clear out to the opposite perimeter to maintain spacing.
  • Read the Defense’s Shoulders: If the on-ball defender turns their head to watch the ball, that is the cutter’s instant trigger to backdoor cut behind them to the ring.
  • Three Dribbles Maximum: Make your decision within one second of catching: shoot, pass, or take up to three aggressive attack dribbles with a purpose.
  • Talk on Both Ends: Offense must call names and call cuts; defenders must constantly shout β€œBALL!”, β€œHELP!”, and β€œSHOT!” on the box-out.

πŸ”„ Variations & Progressions

  • Make It Easier: Play 2v2 with a coach as an all-time designated passer at the top of the key, creating a 3v2 numerical advantage for the offense to practice cutting without heavy pressure.
  • Make It Harder: β€œZero-Dribble Scrimmage”: eliminate dribbling entirely; players can only score and advance the basketball through sharp pivoting, give-and-go cuts, and precision passing.
